ISTE Standards

ISTE Standard 1: Learner

Educators continually improve their practice by learning from and with others and exploring proven and promising practices that leverage technology to improve student learning. Educators:

  • Set professional learning goals to explore and apply pedagogical approaches made possible by technology and reflect on their effectiveness.

  • Pursue professional interests by creating and actively participating in local and global learning networks.

  • Stay current with research that supports improved student learning outcomes, including findings from the learning sciences.

One way that I am fulfilling this standard is through my Twitter page. I have participated in online Twitter chats with other educators and talked about the greatest issues in education and how we can work to fix them. This has connected me to a global network that I can use to learn more about how to serve my students. Secondly, Pinterest is a great way for educators to learn about new technology. Pinterest can give me ideas about what can work in the classroom and what may not work in the classroom. In the future I will use Pinterest for ideas to get more creative for new projects that are new to my students. Printerest is also a great way to stay connected and gain ideas off of other educators.

ISTE Standard 2: Leader

Educators seek out opportunities for leadership to support student empowerment and success and to improve teaching and learning. Educators:

  • Shape, advance and accelerate a shared vision for empowered learning with technology by engaging with education stakeholders.

  • Advocate for equitable access to educational technology, digital content and learning opportunities to meet the diverse needs of all students.

  • Model for colleagues the identification, exploration, evaluation, curation and adoption of new digital resources and tools for learning.

The first way that I am fulfilling this standard is through my certification as an Apple Educator. Through this certification, I am engaging with new technology and helping to lead the way for new and better digital resources for students. I intend on being a leader as a teacher by showing other teachers how to use new technology like Apple products. S'more is also a great tool for teachers to use throughout the school year. With this newsletter, parents and students can get an idea of how the teacher is. Teachers can update their page with new information  and keep the parents updated on the planned activities coming up.

ISTE Standard 3: Citizen

Educators inspire students to positively contribute to and responsibly participate in the digital world. Educators:

  • Create experiences for learners to make positive, socially responsible contributions and exhibit empathetic behavior online that build relationships and community.

  • Establish a learning culture that promotes curiosity and critical examination of online resources and fosters digital literacy and media fluency.

  • Mentor students in safe, legal and ethical practices with digital tools and the protection of intellectual rights and property.

  • Model and promote management of personal data and digital identity and protect student data privacy.

Twitter is a great tool for teachers to show examples of what to do on social media and what not to do. Twitter is not something I would necessarily show the younger students. Twitter can also be used as a source to share ideas with other students. Secondly, I earned my Google Education Digital Citizenship certification which further educated me on how to be responsible online. I learned about password protection, data protection, and how to detect when a website or email might be a scam. This will help me educate students on how to protect their personal data. I also learned about the permanence of whatever is posted on the internet which is a message I want to relay to my students.

ISTE Standard 4: Collaborator

Educators dedicate time to collaborate with both colleagues and students to improve practice, discover and share resources and ideas, and solve problems. Educators:

  • Dedicate planning time to collaborate with colleagues to create authentic learning experiences that leverage technology.

  • Collaborate and co-learn with students to discover and use new digital resources and diagnose and troubleshoot technology issues.

  • Use collaborative tools to expand students' authentic, real-world learning experiences by engaging virtually with experts, teams and students, locally and globally.

  • Demonstrate cultural competency when communicating with students, parents and colleagues and interact with them as co-collaborators in student learning.

I collaborate with other teachers through my Pinterest page. Through this social media platform, I am able to get ideas from other teachers. Parents could also follow my Pinterest account to see what lessons the students are learning in class. This allows the parents to engage in the student's education. This may open up conversation between parents and students at home about what is going on in the classroom which is very important. I can also collaborate with both teachers and parents similarly through my Twitter page.

ISTE Standard 5: Designer

Educators design authentic, learner-driven activities and environments that recognize and accommodate learner variability. Educators:

  • Use technology to create, adapt and personalize learning experiences that foster independent learning and accommodate learner differences and needs.

  • Design authentic learning activities that align with content area standards and use digital tools and resources to maximize active, deep learning.

  • Explore and apply instructional design principles to create innovative digital learning environments that engage and support learning.

One resource that I created that allows students to personalize their experience based on their needs is my English Resource Wakelet. This resource provides several different resources for students to review. Students can choose which activity will help them review the most. This helps the students to be efficient in their studying because they know what will help them the most. Chatterpix is also a great tool for students to creatively present new information. Educators can use chatterpix to get all students excited and engaged about a new topic. All learners can benefit from using chatterpix because it is so unique.

ISTE Standard 6: Facilitator

Educators facilitate learning with technology to support student achievement of the ISTE Standards for Students. Educators:

  • Foster a culture where students take ownership of their learning goals and outcomes in both independent and group settings.

  • Manage the use of technology and student learning strategies in digital platforms, virtual environments, hands-on makerspaces or in the field.

  • Create learning opportunities that challenge students to use a design process and computational thinking to innovate and solve problems.

  • Model and nurture creativity and creative expression to communicate ideas, knowledge or connections.

Through my first technology resource, students are to create a school appropriate story book, that one could use to either tell a story or to present a topic in a unique and easy way. Through my coding lesson plan, students are able to learn the basics of coding, as well as how to fix problems in their codes, that way they can use coding in the future whether it be for a school project or for personal use.

ISTE Standard 7: Analyst

Educators understand and use data to drive their instruction and support students in achieving their learning goals. Educators:

  • Provide alternative ways for students to demonstrate competency and reflect on their learning using technology.

  • Use technology to design and implement a variety of formative and summative assessments that accommodate learner needs, provide timely feedback to students and inform instruction.

  • Use assessment data to guide progress and communicate with students, parents and education stakeholders to build student self-direction.

Concept maps are a good way to keep track of what the students are learning and how the assessments relate to the standards. Teachers can use this as a guideline to make sure students are on the right track. Jeopardy is also a unique way to assess your students. Not only will they have to know the information in order to win, because it is a game and competition the students will be more likely to learn the content.
